Review:

A company called WinGear is marketing a series of CDs called "Windows Essentials." I happened to see this one in one of my local stores, and since I like pinball games, I picked it up. It claims to be designed for Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and to have "over 20 killer tables that have state of the art deluxe features." Well, what it really contains is:

  • Pinball Madness 2000 (designed for Windows 95)(Freeware)
  • Slam Tilt Pinball(Win 95) (Demo: 5 minute limit)
  • 3d Ultra Pinball 2: Creep Night (Demo: 5 minute limit)
  • Starball (MS-DOS 5.0 or Win95)
  • Microsoft Pinball Arcade (Win 95/98) (Trial)
  • Golden Logres Pinball (Win95)
  • Pro Pinball: Big Race USA (Win95/98)
  • Pinball Builder (Win 3.1/95) (Demo)
  • Absolute Pinball (Win95) (Demo)
  • Addiction Pinball (Win 95)
  • Epic Pinball (Demo)
  • 3d Ultra Pinball 3: The Lost Continent (Win 3.2/95)
  • Balls of Steel (Win95)(Demo)
  • 3d Ultra Nascar Pinball (Win95)(Demo: limited to 2 million points)
  • Looney Labyrinth (Win 3.1/95/NT) (Demo)
  • Moraff's Pinball (Win95)(Shareware)
  • Pro Pinball: The Web (Win 95)(Trial:limited to 200 million points)
  • Pro Pinball: Timeshock (Win 95)
  • Total Pinball 3D (DOS)(5 minute limit)
  • Full Tilt! Pinball (Win 3.1/95)(Demo)
  • Full Tilt! 2 Pinball (Win 3.1/95)(Demo)

Also included is DirectX 7.0a.

If you look at the list above, you will notice that most of the games are demos or shareware. In addition, they are generally old games. I am not impressed. In my opinion, I have been stolen from and WinGear misrepresents their products. Since I am running Windows 2000, I have not tried to install any of the pinball tables, nor do I intend to.
