While there is some controversy on this issue, it would seem there is a bug in Windows 98 in which several VxD files are not always copied during installation. (At best, detractors of this fix can claim that it does no good. Certainly it can do no harm so it's worth a shot.) VxD files are virtual device drivers that Windows needs to operate properly. There are two ways to fix this potential problem: Option number one is to manually extract these files from the Windows 98 CD and place them into their respective correct locations. The missing files are: vcomm.vxd vdmad.vxd configmg.vxd vdd.vxd vmouse.vxd ntkern.vxd vflatd.vxd They are located in cab 47 and 48 on the Windows 98 CD. The to which they should be extracted to is both the C:\Windows \System and C:\Windows\System\vmm32 folders -- in other words, extract them twice so that you have two copies on your HDD. Reboot. Alternately, if you prefer the easy method, click here to go to the VxD Fix home page, put together by our good buddy Revolution. He wrote a cool batch file that will do the job quickly and easily. You can download that batch file from his site. http://members.home.net/revolutn/index.html Also, click here to see a list of links to Microsoft Knowledgebase articles dealing with common Windows 98 issues. http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/reference1a.html http://www.PCNineOneOne.com
