“Eliminating Spyware and Viruses“

Now we are going to look at Adware and Spyware. We are going to look a couple of utilities that are free for use. When using the free versions support is not available.

The first utility we are going to look at is Ad-Aware, which deals with Adware and Spyware. You will need connect to the internet, open up Internet Explorer and type in the web address www.download.com hit enter or click on Go.

On the download.com home page scroll down towards the bottom to the Most Popular Downloads section. Click on the Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition link. Once you are on the Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition home page, select Download Now. Choose Save and either save to the desktop or use the dropdown menu to choose a different drive or folder, select Save.

Once the download is complete, minimize or close Internet Explorer and you should see an installer icon on you desktop or in whatever location you save Ad-Aware in. Double left click on the installer to start the installation process. When asked if you are sure you want to run this software go ahead and select Run.

On the Welcome screen, you will want to close out of any other programs you have running to ensure proper installation, then click Next.

You will want to go ahead and read and agree to the license agreement by putting a check in the I agree box and click Next.

On the Destination Location window, you can leave the program in the default destination folder or use the Browse option to change the drive and folder location, select Next.

The next screen allows you to choose if you want to allow Anyone who uses this computer to use this program or only the user logged in at that time. We are going to choose to allow Anyone who uses this computer and click Next. You are now ready to install click Next again.

On the next screen go ahead and deselect the Open Help File option, leave Perform full system scan, and Update definition files now options checked, and select Finish.

You will need to connect to the internet to install the latest definition file for identifying spyware. Once the file is downloaded a scan will start, this may take a few minutes. If it cannot remove all the entries it may ask, if it can run at start up, go ahead a say Yes so it can have complete access to your computer system upon start up, and remove the remaining entries.

Once the scan has completed, you can view your critical objects by selecting the Critical Objects Tab. Here you can see what types of files have been found. You can right click the first open box and choose Select All Objects to check all the objects to be deleted, and select Next to clean out the entries.

On the main page you can see the definition file and review Details about the file like when it was loaded, they update those files about once a month. Go ahead and close out of Ad-Aware.

Now we are going to connect to the internet and using Internet Explorer we are going to go to www.google.com and look for a free Antivirus software. In the search box, type AVG free antivirus

And click Google Search. Select the first entry, which should be AVG Free Advisor, Free anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware tools from www.free.grisoft.com

Once at www.free.grisoft.com we are going to click on the entry that says AVG Anti-Virus Free. On the next page scroll down and you will see that you do not receive support or updates but you will get the virus definitions files with this free version. Select Download Free Version. At the top of the next page, under where it says AVG Free for Window installation files click on avg71free, select Save and choose your Save In location (Desktop is the default) click Save. Installation may take a few minutes.

Once download has completed, you can close out of Internet Explorer. You should see the AVG installer on your desktop or in the location you saved it in. Double left click on the AVG installer icon. On the next box select to Run this software. On the Welcome screen you can read over the information and click Next.

Go ahead and read over the license agreement page to make sure you want to continue with the installation. Please note they will not be responsible for any damage done to your computer while using the free version. If you choose to agree to the terms, select Accept and click Next.

You will then be notified, that this is a free edition and that it is intended for personal use only go ahead and click Accept. You will want to choose Standard as your Installation type and then select Next. Under User Name you can put in your own user name and select Next. You can review the information on the Installation Summary page then select Finish.

Once installation is complete, click OK, this may take a few minutes, You should get a notification that installation is complete. You may get a warning that the internal virus database is out of date.

Select Next and on the next page choose to Check for Updates. Select Internet and it will connect and give you a list of Priority database updates select Update to start the download. You should get a message that the update has successfully fished select Ok. Now that you have check for updates you can select Next.

On this page you can create a rescue disk to use incase of a virus infection. It is strongly recommend that you create a rescue disk. If you choose to do this, you will need a floppy disk or a writeable CD drive to complete this action. We are going to go ahead and click Next and then Scan Computer. Then virus scan may take a while to complete.

Once the scan is complete, you will get the Test Results window, where you can view the details of you scan. Click Close to close out of that window. On the free registration window, select Next, you will get the message that your computer is protected, selected Continue.

You should now be back on the main interface. You can access this anytime by either double clicking on the AVG Free Icon on your desktop, or you can right click on the red, green, black and yellow icon down in your systray and choosing launch AVG control center.

Here you have several options. You can view the Update Manger and see when the next up date is scheduled, they usually do this every five days. You can also view the Scheduler to see what you have scheduled to run. There is also a Check for Updates button to the left incase you want to make sure you are up to date.

If you click on Scheduler and highlight it, you can click on Scheduled Task and see what you have scheduled in more detail or create a new schedule as well as edit any scheduled times to run. Make sure you have the time to run scheduled when your computer will be on and incase you miss the scan you can choose to have it start immediately when computer starts up. Select OK and close out of the Scheduler.

Highlight the Email Scanner and click Properties to review all of your plug ins. Once you have reviewed your plug ins click OK.

The AVG Resident Shield is what keeps viruses from coming into your computer while AVG is active. If you click on it to highlight and click Properties, you can choose to have AVG scan all files and also choose to scan floppy drives as well. Once you select to have all files scanned, the advance options are disabled. Click Ok to close.

Now that you have installed anti-virus software and you have scanned your computer, you will want to make sure you do a virus scan at least once a week.
