Vim -- 98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Vim is a highly configurable text editor built to enable efficient text editing. It is an improved version of the vi editor distributed with most UNIX systems. Vim is often called a "programmer's editor," and so useful for programming that many consider it an entire IDE. It's not just for programmers, though. Vim is perfect for all kinds of text editing, from composing email to editing configuration files.

OpenOffice.org is a multi-platform office productivity suite. It includes the key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. Adobe Reader -- 98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Adobe Reader — free software for viewing and printing Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Created from applications like Adobe Acrobat 6.0, Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0, and more, Adobe PDF files can be viewed on most major operating systems. Adobe Reader 6.0 is the newest version of the familiar Adobe Acrobat Reader software. It also replaces Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader, software for viewing high-fidelity eBooks on your notebook or desktop computer.

This is interesting. A freeware OCR proggy. If you aren't completely satisfied with the OCR software that came with your scanner perhaps SimpleOCE is worth a try. You can edit your scan in the program's built-in WordPad-like editor. Options let you extract fonts and images, highlight possible errors, remove noise from the scanned document, and add words to both dictionaries.

WordWeb -- 98/NT/ME/2000/XP
WordWeb includes a comprehensive English thesaurus and dictionary, and can be used to look up words from within most programs. Features of the free version include definitions and synonyms, proper nouns, related words, pronunciations, 140 000 root words, 115 000 synonym sets, look up words in almost any program.
