The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It started as a program for UNIX written by Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball, but it has since been improved by hundreds of developers and ported to other platforms such as Windows.
