Go To Windows Update Anonymously
Would you like to use the Windows Update feature without being forced to register with Microsoft? OK then, this is what you can do:
- Launch good ol' Regedit.
- Drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion.
- Look for a value named RegDone. If it isn't there create a new value with that name.
- Right click the new value and choose Modify. Make the value 1.
- Close Regedit and ...
- Enjoy!
Change Your Registered User Information
It's an easy Registry tweak, so let's do it.
- Launch Regedit and drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion..
- You can change the value of RegisteredOrganization, RegisteredOwner, or ProductId by double clicking and editing to your hearts content.

Add the Open With... Option to the Right Click Context Menu
How would you like to add the Open with... command to the right click context menu for all files in Windows Explorer for Win9x? I know, you can just hold down the Shift key and do the same thing, but where's the fun in that? Besides, it's an easy Registry tweak. (Note: Don't use this tweak if you use the Microsoft Office Toolbar. Thanks to Jim C. for the heads up.)
- Launch Regedit and drill down to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ Unknown\ shell\ openas\ command
- Note the (Default) string in the right pane. See the value C:\Windows\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1?
- Double click on (Default) and hit CTRL+C to copy the entire command line to the clipboard. Click Cancel. Don't make any changes yet.
- Now go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\* and highlight the * (asterisk) key. Right-click the * and choose New Key. Name this new subkey shell.
- Right click the shell key and add a new subkey named openas.
- Right click openas and add another subkey named command.
- Double click the (Default) string in the right pane and hit CTRL+V to paste that command line you copied earlier.
- OK out of there and exit Regedit.
- Enjoy!
Live Scrolling In Word97
Do you use Word97? Do you hate the way it won't scroll properly when you grab the scroll bar and try to scroll down or up a few pages? It just jumps to wherever you happen to be when you let go of the scroll bar. Here's the fix:
- Launch Regedit.
- Drill down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Office\ 8.0\ Word\ Options
- Look for the value named LiveScrolling or create it if it doesn't exist.
- The data type is REG_SZ
- The default is disabled = 0 but you can change that to enabled = 1
