Window Xp Tune up Video #2

Now the you have checked your drive for errors, we are going to take a look at deleting temporary internet files. There are a couple of ways to do this.

First, we are going to empty out our Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files. To do this, simply open up your Internet Explorer, select the Tools menu and select Internet Options. On the General Tab, there are a couple of options for Deleting Cookies and Delete Files.

We will go ahead and click on Delete Cookies. Then it will ask if you are sure, click OK. Once completed, select Delete Files, and put a check mark in the box that says Delete Offline Content. Then select OK.

Now we are going to enable Internet Explorer to delete these files every time you close Internet Explorer. Select the Advance Tab, scroll towards the bottom, and put a check mark in the box beside Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed. Select Apply then OK. Go ahead and close Internet Explorer.

Next, we are going to look at some temporary internet files of a different type. Go to the Start Menu, select My Computer, and then select the C drive. Select the Tools menu and then select Folder Options and then the View Tab. Under Hidden Files make sure Show Hidden Files and Folders is enabled. Select Apply then Ok.

Now we are going to browse through the Documents and Settings Folder. Please keep in mind this action is only for the user that is currently logged in. You will need to repeat this process for each user that logs into the computer.

Select your folder and then select the Local Settings folder, select the Temp directory folder click Edit then Select All. (Click on a file if you want to deselect it.) Then right click and choose Delete. Once that is completed click on the Back button until you are back to your C drive.

Once you are back on the C drive you will select the Temp folder. Once inside the Temp folder click Edit then Select All then right click and select Delete.

To make sure we a rid of these types of files, we are going to do a search for these file types. Go back to the Start Mean and select Search. Select All Files and Folders, and change the look in area to the C drive using the pull down menu. Under the file name type *.tmp and click Search.

This may take a few minutes. When the search is complete, click Edit then Select All, right click and Delete. If you cannot delete all the files because some of them are in use by the computer, try selecting a few files at a time then right click and delete.

If you cannot delete all of the files, you may need to reboot in safe mode and repeat this process. When you power on your computer hit the F8 key at the top of your key board about every second until the Windows XP boot menu comes up, from there you can select safe mode.

Now we are going to perform another search. Select Change file name or keywords. In the file name box type ~* and select Search. Once search is completed, select Edit and Select All, right click and Delete. You may have to reboot in safe mode to delete all the files.
