Need Computer Tech Support?
In the old days PC911 had a forum where you could post questions and answers to. Now that we have this fancy new fangled blog technology I would like to ask you to post your tech support questions here and we will address them. A lot of people have asked for the forums back but we would prefer to use this blog as a means to help you with your computer problems. Post your question as a comment below and we will help you. It’s that simple. |

My Windows XP Pro system will display the Windows logo and then then the screen goes black and nothing else displays. I tried another monitor and got the exact same results. No new hardware/software was added to the system. A system restore, last known good configuration were done and again I get the same results. The computer will boot into safe mode and display. Can you help?

Hello Anji
If its working in safe mode, based on your description you have a problem with your video drivers. Change the drivers to a default of VGA or sVGA from safe more and reboot. Once its booting up right this way then try installing the correct drivers for the card.
It could be somebody tried to update and used the wrong drivers or your current drivers are corrupt.
Also a Rollback of drivers is a good option if there was a recent driver change such as via windows update.

Hi Robert,
We have got a few requests for the old forum. Maybe we will bring it back one day but we need moderators for forums.
Here is the best AVI to DVD Converter I have tried.

Thank you very much! You’re right about it being the best. It seems to be the only one that’s worth it AND easy to use…

Now for another one! Can anybody recommend a device where I can take VHS tapes and put them on PC, then burn to DVD?
Thank you.

Hi Robert! You will need a video capture card which has input component connections that match you VCR output. There are many different brands available. Pinnacle seems to offer many different options.

I purchased a VHS to DVD/DVD to VHS recorder from Costco for $179.00 and have found it to work great. It will record from VHS to DVD and vice versa as well as acting as a player for both mediums. As an experiment, I copied a write protected DVD to tape and then copied the tape to a blank DVD. I was amazed at the quality of the final DVD. I know that this is illegal but it was a rented DVD that we had not found time to watch before the return date so we make a backup copy.
On another subject: I guess the keepers of 911 know what’s best but I sure do miss the old forum format. It was so easy to scan other people’s problems and find needed answers without having to ask questions. I have great respect for Shelly’s knowledge; does anyone know his feelings on this new format?

I guess I must be stupid because I can’t figure out how to ask a question with this new format. This page is the only thing found that resembles a place to ask questions but even this is confined to one subject. It is obvious that this site has gone to being primarily a place to place advertisements and it no longer is interested in doing what it was created for; being a help site. I found one paragraph stating to post a question below; “its that simple” was the comment. Well, again I must be stupid because I could find no place to post a new question, so it’s not that simple. I have financially supported this site for years but I guess now that will no longer be necessary since now the presentation of paying advertisements is its primary purpose.

Hi Cashtonh
I’m very sorry that you don’t like the new design. We have considered bringing back the forums but need moderators for it etc. You obviously found where to ask a question on the blog here, I’m not sure why you would call us greedy and get angry that we show ads on part of the site. It’s really easy to contact us, just leave a comment on the blog.
Maybe we will get the forum back sometime.
Have a great day

Please note that I have not submitted a question because I still have not found a place to do that. Even though this page addressed an unrelated problem, I submitted comments here because I could find no other place to do it. And for the record I didn’t get angry because you show ads. I got angry because you tried to con us by saying the site was changed to make it more user friendly and nothing could be further from the truth. We both know that you changed it for financial reasons. To make these changes is your perrogative but at least be honest and tell us the truth. I interface almost daily with politicians that tell me that they are screwing the public for their own good so I recognize that line of reasoning pretty readily. If you truly care about helping people, allow the following information to be published: For those liking the old forum format, see this site: http://www.5starsupport.com/ipboard/index.php. It is very similar in format to what this site used to have with viewers from all over seeing the questions and providing answers. And best of all, it’s free, working on voluntary donations only.

Hello ADMIN or anyone,
How long does it take for “moderation” to occur?
My question pertains to this link on your web site which doesn’t work for me:
http://www.pcnineoneone.com/tweaks/layout.zip
Would really appreciate some help.

Hi William
The moderation time is usually pretty fast.
That link seems to be working fine and we checked it from 2 locations.
Let us know if you have any more problems.

The problem is not downloading from your site. That works fine. The problem is the application doesn’t do what it is supposed to. I have downloaded and installed this per instructions but the two new items “Save Desktop Icon Layout” and “Restore Desktop Icon Layout” never show up when you right-click on almost any of the standard desktop icons. I have had two other people download and try this and it didn’t work for them either. Looks like the auther needs to be consulted. If you are unable to do this would you please send me contact information for me to use to talk with him.
I am using WinXp SP2.

It is now 10 days since the last posting. If you are still working on an answer then please tell me so. Other wise if you are not going to do anything about it please tell me that also.
If you have not done so you should probably remove that link so as not to frustrate others.
